What is the purpose of the examination?
The Catholic High School Entrance Examination program gives some objective data about eighth-grade students who are applying to Catholic High School. The Catholic High schools use the examination results to make decisions about applicants. Many schools also use the information for grouping and tracking of ninth-grade students.
Who should take this test?
This test is only for eight-grade students seeking entrance into a Catholic High School in the ninth-grade. Other transfer students should contact the school(s) of their choice for admission procedures. Seventh-grade students are not permitted to take the test.
What does the examination measure?
The examination measures both ability and achievement. Achievement is measured in the areas of reading, mathematics and language. The tests have been developed by classroom teachers. Each year's test questions are kept by each student. Consequently, the test questions are new each year.
How does an eighth-grade student register to sit for the examination?
Only eighth-grade students may take the entrance examination. On-line registration is the preferred method of registration. The student may also do a mail-in registration and return it with the non-refundable registration fee of $60 to the CHSEE Inc. There is an additional $15 late and walk in fee.
Is the test offered with testing accommodations?
Students who pre-qualify for testing accommodations (extended time and/or enlarged print) by submitting the appropriate documents and application may take the exam at one of three locations: Holy Trinity Diocesan High School, St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School and McGann-Mercy Diocesan High School. Is it possible to take a retake of the exam without accommodations and also with accommodations?
Yes. Student s should be aware of the admissions requirements for high schools of their choice. All students are eligible to take the exam without accommodations. Only students who pre-qualify for the specified testing accommodations of extended time and/or enlarged print may take the exam with accommodations. Students who register to take the exam without accommodations and also with accommodations must register twice for the exam and pay both fees ($60.00 each). For more on accommodations, click here.
