Sacred Heart Academy, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph for over 65 years, is a Catholic college preparatory school for young women. The education mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph is rooted in the mission of Jesus to reveal God’s inclusive love and desire for unity and reconciliation. Sacred Heart empowers young women with strong academic and leadership potential to make a difference in their communities, in the Church, and in the world.
Enrollment each year is about 800 students who come from 45 school districts from areas as far west as Queens and as far east as Riverhead. Rigorous academics, varied extracurricular activities and religious values nourish mind, body and soul. The result is the development of purposeful and successful women who “lead with heart” and are ready for life’s challenges.
Students are afforded extensive personal attention with small classes and highly qualified teachers. The challenging curriculum at Sacred Heart Academy includes two complimentary strands of course offerings. Each strand includes courses that are basis to a classical, college-preparatory education and relevant to a digital and globally focused world. These two strands are referred to as STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and STELLAR (Social Science, Theology, English Lang/Lit, (World) Languages, Law & Business, the Arts, and Research in Humanities).
Sacred Heart Academy is the first, and currently the only, all-girls high school to establish a Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab where students have access to the same information platform used by industry leaders. In addition, a state-of-the-art Science Research Center prepares students for local and national competitions and most importantly for positions in fields currently under-represented by women.
Honors and Advanced Placement courses are available in English, Math, Language, Science, Social Studies and the Arts. Under a dual enrollment program, Sacred Heart students may take courses through Adelphi University, Molloy College, St. John’s University and St. Joseph’s College leading to academic college-level credit.
Every young woman is encouraged to further develop her gifts and talents by taking advantage of one or more opportunities in our varied Fine Arts Program. Sacred Heart also participates in over twelve sports and is consistently ranked among the Top Ten Teams on Long Island. Our award-winning campus (ACEC Silver Award) includes a new track and field that is utilized by sports teams and all gym classes. In addition, over 40 clubs enable students to have fun, to work cooperatively, and to engage in projects that appeal to their particular interests.
In addition to a four year curriculum in theology, students in the SHA faith community are nourished by retreats, liturgies, daily prayer, special seasonal rituals, and service requirements that respond to the principles of social justice, especially the needs of the poor and women.
Sacred Heart Academy is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and holds full membership in the National Catholic Educational Association. Sacred Heart has been recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence – the highest honor a high school can achieve.
